about

I was moved to write this song about the mid 80's National Geographic Cover "Afghan Girl" (photo by Steve McCurry) when I saw an NPR news article that tracked her many years later.... Her name is Sharbat Gula and I hope the words of the song speak for themselves.

lyrics

haunting beauty, eyes seem to stare at me
down to my very soul
famous face on cover of magazines
but that was many years ago
all the world knew about her face
she didn't know the symbol she became
she only suffered and the years were long and hard

a movie star's not what I mean
I'm talking 'bout a refugee of war
who the world could never repay

she showed me that lives are sometimes different
than the lives that we see
she gave the gift of clarity...
(she taught me so much)

CHORUS
(it showed in her)
eyes showed me that I need to stop believing lies
thinking that I may have been suffering
beautiful eyes cannot erase all the pain upon that face
makes you know your place
keeps you grateful for
the life you've been given

respect, dignity security, a little piece of mind... ah haaa

all around us hunger and poverty
your troubles seem so small
took for granted, what every life could be
and learned that its not true for all
see her strength know she survived
you learn in war, the preciousness of life
gives you the strength to heal the worries in your world

imagine life when you're not free
without a choice and she becomes a beacon
and a hope for those who suffer.

makes me thankful for liberty
that I live a life thats free yeah
(homelessness, war poverty... ah haaa)
